Dimension tables

Fastener dimensions to DIN, ISO, IS and NF E

93 fastener types covering the standards on our DIN chart: bolts and machine screws, tapping and wood screws, studs, eye bolts, nuts, washers, pins, circlips, rivets, threaded rod and the French NF E standard fasteners (hex bolts, hex nuts, heavy flange bolts, Z / M / L / LL plain washers, CS and CL conical washers). Where DIN, ISO, IS and NF E differ, each standard has its own tab and the values that change are shaded, so you can see at a glance which sizes are not interchangeable. Click any row to update the drawing.

For information only. Values are nominal, taken from the standards as published (checked October 2026). Standards are revised: always check the current edition named on your drawing before production or inspection.

Property classes: steel bolts and nuts

ISO 898-1 (IS 1367 Part 3 in India). Read the class as two numbers: the first × 100 is the nominal tensile strength in MPa, and the second ÷ 10 is the yield-to-tensile ratio. A 10.9 bolt: nominal 1000 MPa tensile and 900 MPa yield; the guaranteed minimums in the table are a little higher (1040 / 940 MPa).

Rule: always use a nut of the same or higher class than the bolt. A weaker nut strips before the bolt reaches its strength.

Reading head markings

Metric steel bolts from M5 up carry the class and the maker's mark on the head. Stainless shows the grade. Inch (SAE) bolts use radial lines instead of numbers.

Stainless steel grades

ISO 3506-1. The letter and digit give the steel group, the number after the dash × 10 gives the minimum tensile strength in MPa.

Quick choice: dry indoors, A2 is enough. Near the sea, swimming pools or chemicals, use A4. Stainless threads can gall; use anti-seize on A2 / A4 nuts and bolts.

Tightening torque calculator

Preload is set to 75% of the proof load (ISO 898-1 proof stress for steel, 0.2% proof stress for stainless). Torque = K × preload × diameter.

For guidance only. Follow the torque given on your drawing or by the equipment maker, and use a calibrated torque wrench.

Fastener weight calculator

Choose any DIN, ISO, IS or NF E standard, then the size, length and material, to get the weight per piece, per 100 and per 1000, and how many pieces make a kilo. Useful for quotes, dispatch and freight.

How the weight is worked out. Every standard in our dimension tables is listed (DIN, ISO, IS and NF E). Each result carries a label so you know how exact it is:
  • Standard table the mass published for that standard (kg per 1000 pcs, steel 7.85 g/cm³), for 46 standards including DIN 931, 933, 912, 934, 985, 125, 9021, 127, 7991, 7985, 965, 913, 916, 7984, 6912, 603, 6921, 84, 7, 1481, 471, 472, 975, 580 and 582. Between two listed lengths the value is interpolated; beyond the longest listed length it is extended at the table’s own weight per mm.
  • Table-corrected no table for this exact standard or length: calculated from its own dimensions, then corrected with the published table of the same part (for example ISO 4014 with DIN 931, ISO 4032 with DIN 934). Typically within ±2–3 %.
  • Calculated no published table exists: calculated from the standard’s dimensions, with the tolerance shown.
Published tables are nominal values; real parts vary with tolerances, thread rolling and head forming. Zinc plating adds under 1 %, hot-dip galvanising about 3–6 %. Other materials are scaled by density. For invoicing, confirm with the weight of a sample batch.

Sheet metal fasteners: holes and sheet hardness

Self-clinching parts must be harder than the sheet. Blind rivets and rivet nuts need the right hole: too small and they will not enter, too big and they spin.

Finish & corrosion

Coatings and finishes

Choose a finish by where the joint will live. Salt-spray hours are typical values to red rust and depend on the exact specification.

FinishThicknessSalt spray (typical)Best forWatch out for
Zinc plated, clear / blue5–8 µm72–120 hIndoors, dry outdoorRusts quickly near the sea
Zinc plated, yellow8 µm96–200 hMachinery, electrical panelsUsually hexavalent chromium: not RoHS compliant
Zinc-nickel8–12 µm500–720 h+Automotive, under-bonnetHigher cost

Black oxide + oil~1 µmVery lowSocket cap screws indoors, toolingNot for outdoor use
Phosphate + oil5–15 µmLowLubricated assembly, paint baseStore dry
Stainless, passivated—InherentFood, marine, chemicalGalling; isolate from aluminium in wet areas

Electroplating 10.9 and 12.9 bolts needs baking to avoid hydrogen embrittlement. Zinc flake coatings avoid the risk.

Finish & corrosion

Galvanic corrosion: which fastener in which metal?

In wet or salty conditions, two different metals form a battery and the less noble one corrodes. The fastener should be the more noble metal, because it is small next to the large part.
